Gisèle Pelicot - Shame must change sides

26 Feb 26 Gisèle Pelicot - Shame must change sides

At Somerset Phoenix Service, we have been deeply moved by the courage of Gisèle Pelicot and her powerful statement that “shame must change sides.” Her words speak to something many of the children and young people we support have carried for far too long. A misplaced sense of shame that never belonged to them.

Shame thrives in silence, secrecy, and stigma. Those who commit abuse rely on it. By speaking publicly and refusing to hide, Pelicot has sent a clear message: the responsibility and the shame lie solely with those who cause harm, not with those who endure it.

We stand firmly with survivors of child sexual abuse. We work to create spaces where children and young people feel believed, heard, and supported. Where shame is gently lifted, and replaced with understanding, dignity, and strength.

Changing where shame belongs is not just a statement; it is part of the healing process.
